Stay Safe & Sane While Traveling on the Busiest Travel Day of the Year!

Today, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving day, is the busiest travel day of the entire year with the second busiest day being the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  The crowded highways can make an already stressful time of year even worse.  If you are driving to your final Thanksgiving destination this year, follow these travel tips to reduce your time and stress on the road (thereby increasing the chance that you will arrive safely at your destination).

Identify Alternate Routes

Before you leave home, print maps showing a few alternate routes to your final destination.  This way, you can more easily access a detour if your most direct route is congested with traffic or closed due to a crash.  Don’t wait to look for this information while you are driving: causing a crash because you are driving while distracted will ruin your holiday!

Choose Travel Days Wisely

Drive on the days most folks don’t: far fewer people travel to their destination on Thanksgiving day than on the day before.  If you have a long way to go and a single day of travel will not work for your circumstances, consider leaving a day earlier, like the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.  Since the Sunday after Thanksgiving is the second busiest travel day of the year, consider heading home on Saturday or waiting until Monday instead.

Check the Forecast

There’s a saying in our state that goes something like this: “if you don’t like the weather in Colorado, just wait five minutes”.  If you’ve been here for any period of time, you know it is not unheard of for us to go from 60 degree sunshine to a blinding snowstorm in a single day.  Check the weather forecast for the days you plan to travel and plan accordingly: drive when the weather is expected to be moderate or if you must drive in less than ideal conditions, make sure your car is winter-ready, and check out our winter weather driving tips.  http://coloradosprings-injuryattorney.com/?p=703
