School Zone Safety Rules
This past week we have been blogging about safety rules to keep in mind now that school is back in session in and around Colorado Springs. Today we address school zone safety rules for drivers: in addition to school bus safety rules, drivers should also be aware of the following when traveling through school zones.
School zone speed limits are 20 miles per hour, but drivers in school zones need to go above and beyond slowing down. When driving through a school zone, be extra vigilant for children in crosswalks, on sidewalks, and crossing the street in unexpected places.
Green does not necessarily mean GO! Many intersections near schools are manned by crossing guards who may stop traffic with a green light to allows children and/or parents to safely cross an intersection. Take a breath and wait patiently for everyone to clear the roadway before driving through the intersection.
While we would hope that the safety of school children is enough to motivate us all to follow safety rules while driving through school zones, but if you need more incentive, consider the cost of a speeding ticket in a school zone. It will cost you more than double for the ticket alone and don’t forget the cost associated with attending court and insurance premium hikes associated with moving violations.
