Three Perish, One Seriously Injured, After Crash on Colorado Springs East Side
The intersection of Galley Road and Babcock Road was closed for over 5 hours on Thursday night as Colorado Springs Police investigated the scene of a 2 car crash that claimed the lives of nearly all the vehicle occupants involved.
Around 9:30 p.m. on July 27, 2017, CSPD responded to a call regarding a serious crash on the East Side of Colorado Springs. Their investigation determined that a Honda van, driven by a 76-year-old man, was northbound on Babcock Road crossing Galley Road when it was broadsided by a Jeep, driven by a younger male, which was eastbound on Galley Road. Both the driver of the Honda and his 73-year-old female passenger passed away due to the injuries they sustained in the crash. The Jeep passenger, a 31-year-old male, was not wearing seatbelt and also died from his injuries. The sole survivor of the crash is the Jeep driver who was hospitalized in serious condition. Police had not charged anyone or suspected alcohol as a contributing factor in the crash as of yesterday, July 28, 2017, but announced that their investigation was ongoing at that time.
The intersection where the crash occurred is controlled only by a stop sign for traffic in each direction on Babcock Road. This means that traffic on Galley Road is not required to yield to traffic on Babcock Road. The layout of the intersection, combined with the facts released by the Colorado Springs Police Department, indicate that the surviving Jeep driver likely did not cause this crash.
