In the early hours of the morning yesterday, June 12th, a CSPD officer on patrol discovered the scene of a rollover car crash involving 2 vehicles at North Chelton Road and East Platte Avenue. Two occupants of an Oldsmobile Cutlass were ejected from the vehicle upon impact and one of them later died from injuries caused by the crash.
The occupant of the other vehicle, a Ford truck, was trapped inside the truck which had been overturned upon impact. The driver of the Ford had to be mechanically extricated from the vehicle by Colorado Springs Fire Department personnel. Mechanical extraction typically involves tools such as “the jaws of life.”
In the course of their investigation, CSPD determined that the Oldsmobile ran a red light as it traveled southbound on North Chelton Road through the intersection of East Platte Avenue. The Ford, traveling eastbound on East Platte Avenue with the right-of-way, was struck on the driver’s side and rolled as a result of the collision.
2017 Colorado Springs traffic fatalities are outpacing statistics from 2016. The death of the Oldsmobile occupant marks the fourteenth traffic fatality in our community this year, whereas last year at this time, there had been only eleventraffic fatalities. The other two people involved in this crash were seriously injured and treated at local hospitals.
Police have not officially announced whether drugs and alcohol are suspected as contributing factors in this crash. The investigation is ongoing at this time and anyone with information about those involved in the crash or the crash itself are requested to call CSPD at (719) 444-7000 or the Crime Stoppers Tip Line (719) 634-STOP.
